Gingivitis Treatment from Our Local Miami Beach Dentist

Gingivitis is the initial stage of gum disease, characterized by inflamed and swollen gums that bleed easily, especially when you brush your teeth. More than 64 million people suffer from some form of gum disease, which is also known as periodontitis. Gingivitis is the easiest form of gum disease to treat, but it’s important to visit your dentist right away if you experience swollen painful gums. As gum disease progresses, it becomes harder and more expensive to treat. At Kmart dental in Miami, we treat all stages of gum disease. We are committed to providing professional dental care so that your smile will last a lifetime.

What Should I Do if I Have Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is caused by bacterial growth on the teeth, especially near the gum line. When bacteria is left on the teeth for too long, the gums become inflamed, eventually leading to periodontitis and tooth decay.  Proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are the first line of defense against gum disease, but if your gums are swollen or painful, don’t wait to make an appointment. We work closely with our Miami dental patients to prevent and treat all stages of gum disease.

Stages of Gum Disease and Recommended Treatments

  • Gingivitis - The most common state of gum disease is also the easiest to treat. Professional dental treatment is required at this stage, but with proper dental care, gingivitis is totally reversible. We recommend professional cleanings four times each year to help prevent bacteria build-up.
  • Periodontitis - The second stage of gum disease is characterized by very swollen gums, tissue damage, infection, and eventually, loss of bone.  Periodontitis is often treated with professional dental cleanings, and sometimes scaling and root planning. Scaling removes tartar and bacteria from the tooth surface, especially below the gum line. Root planning will help discourage the buildup of bacteria. Kmart dental will work with patients to develop a unique treatment plan.
  • Advanced Periodontitis - This is an advanced stage of gum disease that should be treated right away to prevent tooth and bone loss. Advanced periodontitis requires an individualized treatment plan based on the patient’s unique symptoms.
